Our Gear

We’ve chosen a four wheel drive (4WD) motorhome built by a local manufacturer called Explorer Motorhomes. The motorhome component is built on to the back of a Toyota Hilux single cab utility. To prepare for outback travel we ordered the following accessories:

  • Front recovery points (see yellow point in the chassis in the pic above)
  • Bull bar
  • Cooper all terrain Light Truck Tyres
  • Snorkle
  • Additional inline fuel filter
  • Internal air compressor
  • TPMS (Tyre Pressure Management System)
  • Dash Cam
  • UHF radio
  • Garmin inReach Mini 2 (inc PLB)
  • Sat phone
  • iPad holder for navigation
  • Starlink satellite system
  • 2 x 120aH Lithium batteries
  • 4 solar panels (total 520W)
  • Induction cooktop
  • Diesel hot water and heating
  • Max-trax pins and towbar
  • 2nd spare tyre

Our previous vehicles …

Our previous vehicle was a Mercedes 4WD Sprinter motorhome from TRAKKA. WE made the video above as a sales pitch, but it will show you what this vehicle was like. It features in many of the blogs of earlier trips. The video below was taken shortly after we bought the Sprinter and we tested it out at Vic Widmans 4WD School.

For a considerable time, we also had a Mitsubishi Pajero which was used for the more rugged travel. Accommodation was via a rooftop tent or a separate tent. However, with the current Explorer, we feel that it will accommodate our current and future travel needs.
